Director of Sport Franco Baldini admits he could not see his contract renewed, while Roma register for the Intertoto Cup.
There have been strong reports over the last few days that the rapport between Baldini and President Franco Sensi has deteriorated to such a degree that he won’t stay on past his current deal, which expires at the end of the season.
“Everyone keeps talking about renewing the contracts of Francesco Totti and Antonio Cassano,” smiled Baldini, “but the club still hasn’t discussed my deal either.”
However, the Giallorossi transfer guru then took steps to deny that he was being cut out of the loop – such as the loan of Mido to Tottenham when Baldini admitted he was the only one who wanted the Egyptian to stay.
“If there are differences with the Sensi family then these are purely personal and nothing to do with my role,” added the director.
Above all, the split was caused by Baldini’s continual ‘old style’ stance of criticising Milan, Juventus and Inter, whereas Sensi’s daughter Rossella is moving the club towards a closer transfer relationship with the giants of Italian football.
“I thank the fans for rushing to my defence recently, but they haven’t understood the situation. The club did everything it could to create a competitive squad, the same one that I had in mind. They also have the right to pursue whatever political stance they think opportune, but I as a man have different views and they are not representative of Roma.”
Newspapers also suggested that Baldini was set for a move to Arrigo Sacchi's Real Madrid or even Fiorentina for the native Tuscan.
“No other club has requested my services and I have not been in contact with anyone,” continued the director of sport. “Roma fans should be thankful to the Sensi family for building a long-term project that owes everything to them and very little to me.”
The Capital club has struggled this season and their dreams of a Champions’ League spot are evaporating, while the competition for UEFA Cup places is equally fierce. Roma have officially registered for the Intertoto Cup, but this is something the side does every season – almost as a superstition – as they have never actually needed to take this step.
