| Del Neri admires Euro Chievo | Sunday 6 August, 2006 |
Chievo are preparing for their first foray into the Champions League and former Coach Gigi Del Neri believes the time is right for them to shine.
The Calciopoli shake-up has placed the Flying Donkeys into the Preliminary Round of Europe’s premiere competition, where they will travel to Sofia for the first leg against Levski on Wednesday evening.
“Now the neighbourhood side is no more,” explained former tactician Del Neri, who first took Chievo to Serie A in 2001.
“I see a great club with the President and director Giovanni Sartori doing a wonderful job at the highest level. Back then we were a surprise outfit, but Chievo are a reality now and I think it’s hardly a surprise to see them in Europe.”
This will be their second continental adventure and hopefully longer than the last, as Del Neri saw his minnows eliminated from the UEFA Cup at the first hurdle by Red Star Belgrade.
“That was a very different team. Bepi Pillon’s side is more mature, compact and clinical to the right degree. I also think they are a wise squad, as we were perhaps magical, but immature. Our adventure was a brief one, but remained beautiful and the kind of emotion you only live once in your lifetime.”
